Makueni District Water Project
|
|
Introduction
Makueni District lies in the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) zone. The downward trend in the performance of the country’s economy coupled with stringent expenditure and austerity measures imposed by the donor community, this has consequently slowed down the development momentum in the rural areas.
It is one of the twelve districts that form the Eastern Province of Kenya. It borders Kajiado District to the west, Taita Taveta to the south, Kitui to the east and Machakos District to the north. The district covers an area of 7,440 km2.
Out of this, Makueni Sisters’ project will focus on areas near Wote town.
The division has 50% of the population living below the poverty line. Reduction of poverty therefore remains one of the greatest challenges.
Crop farming in the district is mainly for subsistence use. The major crops grown in the division are maize, beans, pigeon peas and cowpeas.
Irrigated horticultural crop farming is rarely undertaken but in smallholdings on individual farmer basis. Livestock rearing is also an important economic activity in the district.
Environment
Due to the erratic nature of rain, water harvesting through roof catchment is not reliable. The area experiences two rainy seasons, namely, the long rains occurring in March/April and averaging 329.3mm and the short rains occurring in November/December and averaging 372.4 mm.
The hilly parts receive 800-1200 mm of rainfall per year. High temperatures in the low lying areas cause high evaporation. The area has a population density of 176 people per sq km
The highest concentration of population is near the towns. Makueni is prone to drought and famine that occurs periodically. Consequently, lack of water for both domestic and animal use is quite rampant. Livestock forms one of the major sources of income for the community.
Our Objectives
Recognizing water as a basic need whose continued scarcity condemns people to a life of poverty and devoid of dignity is our main objective. This includes mobilizing and disbursing funds and materials meant for provision of water, training members on management, promote agencies with same objectives and to form alliances with NGOs and like minded organizations to help alleviate poverty through provision of water.
Others include
• To reduce food and nutritional insecurity through Nutrition and Health Education, income generation activities, growth monitoring and food relief/AID.
• To raise, lobby, mobilize and disburse funds and other resources aimed at provision of water for both human and domestic animal use
• To raise the Community capacity to sustainable plan, implement, monitor, evaluate and disseminate information on their Development.
• To utilize environmental resources taking cognizance of the fragile ecosystem.
